Workshops

Viktor Butko in MAINE

Stonington, Maine
June 21-24th, 2024
10-5 (exact times TBD,  if there are good evenings for sunset painting we will do that instead of the morning time)

Class Description

The class will focus on basic knowledge of composition, design and color while working directly from the landscape. The class will include a demo and plenty of personal instructions at the student’s easel.  The class is for all levels but a basic working knowledge of oil painting is helpful.

On the first morning of the workshop, Viktor will do a demo that will show the main stages of working on a piece. (The demo may continue on the second morning).  The students will then start independent work with his guidance.  Students  will conduct two works – one in the morning light and one in the afternoon  (or eve, we will decide depending on weather) . Bring extra canvases in case of drastic weather change though! Emphasis will be on understanding the tonal-color relationships, drawing and composition. At the end of the workshop, we will arrange a review and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the resulting work.

A couple things to note– as we haven’t done a workshop up there before , a little flexibility will be required of everyone : )

-There will be walking with your easel/etc. We will meet in the town parking lot and paint locally, there are bathrooms there. There are a couple spots that could be great that you can’t park at, so walking (or driving and dropping your stuff and then parking in town and walking back) is a must.

-If the evening weather looks like it will be a good sunset, we will potentially switch the hours to afternoon and eve

-Rain dates (none!)-  people will be booking their own places (and are responsible for their transportation, meals and materials)  and we don’t have a studio to paint indoors so we will have to accommodate the weather! This could mean painting under shelter or switching hours of the day to avoid the rain. We don’t have a studio there , but we will do our best to be flexible and make it work.

A material  list will be provided.  A little cart might be a good option for those not accustomed to carrying things around. Bug Spray, sunscreen, appropriate footwear, layers, plenty of water, all are recommended!

Refund / cancellation policy

Full refunds are given for this class  6 weeks before the first class, less a $45 administrative fee. No tuition refunds will be given thereafter unless the spot can be filled. (this is a stricter cancellation policy because it’s a travel workshop)  No partial refunds or pro-rated classes are offered for student absence or scheduling conflicts.  If the instructor needs to cancel class for any reason a refund will be offered (or credit towards your next class)

3 Day Workshop on Value with Kelly Carmody

3 SPOTS LEFT

May 31st- June 2nd, 2024
10-5
In private north lit studio (zooming in is available if you can’t travel, please inquire)
Waltham MA

420$  limited to a small class size
MIN 5 to run class

My most important teachers over the past 20 years taught value and how to use it to support the overall design of ones picture, this means, not copying exactly what you see but understanding an hierarchy of values so that the picture holds together not only as the subject that you are painting but a 2-d design on the surface on the painting, This class is a 3 day intensive to work on exercises that drive this point home- students will be working from life and learning to simplify and arrange values. We will not be using color in this class, (though we will talk about how this translates to color)  This is not necessarily a drawing class and not a substitute for a great drawing class but it’s a great introduction to thinking about painting a different way.
There will be plenty of individual attention, plenty of time to paint and lots of looking at paintings from the past as examples

We will cover how values are organized and compressed in order to create light effects and compositions.  This workshop is a great introduction to value or a refresher course on how to use it more effectively. There will be follow up check in sessions offered over the summer so you can continue the learning process with feedback.

We will do 3 separate paintings, one each day. Each one tackling more values.

This is a great class for all levels, but a basic working knowledge of oils (or your paint of choice) is very helpful.

Landscape and Outdoor Still Life with Viktor Butko 2024

Codman Farm
October 4-7
10am-5pm (1-2 lunch)
$520

Class Description

The class will focus on basic knowledge of composition, design and color while working directly from the landscape. The class will include a demo and plenty of personal instructions at the student’s easel.  The class is for all levels but a basic working knowledge of oil painting is helpful. There are spots available for both Still life and Landscape.

On the first morning of the workshop, Viktor will do a demo that will show the main stages of working on a piece. (The demo may continue on the second morning).  The students will then start independent work with his guidance.  Students  will conduct two works – one in the morning light and one in the afternoon. (bring extra canvases in case of drastic weather change though!) Emphasis will be on understanding the tonal-color relationships, drawing and composition. Depending on weather we will have a day in the studio learning how to develop the paintings further away from the motif.

At the end of the workshop, we will arrange a review and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the resulting work.

 Weather.. Details…

Class size is limited to 12 people and students are responsible for bringing their own supplies (and a chair for demo!) . A material  list will be provided. In the case of a full rain day we will paint from the Waltham Studio windows. (if it’s a small shower we will wait it out) and possibly have a delayed start (or break)  and go into the evening. For landscape painting flexibility is needed! And since people travel from far and/or adjust work schedules/childcare  to take the class we make it work within the 4 scheduled days of the workshop. . so, minor adjustments to the schedule are possible due to weather. Though September in New England is generally very nice!
Please note that the workshop is at a working farm and we are guests there. Farm Rules will apply. Also, though the terrain is not especially rugged nor is it huge, expect some (not paved) walking with your easels/supplies. A little cart might be a good option for those not accustomed to carrying things around. Bug Spray, sunscreen, appropriate footwear, layers, plenty of water, all are recommended!

Refund / cancellation policy

Full refunds are given for classes withdrawn 4 weeks before the first class, less a $45 administrative fee. No tuition refunds will be given thereafter unless the spot can be filled.  No partial refunds or pro-rated classes are offered for student absence or scheduling conflicts.  If the instructor needs to cancel class for any reason a makeup will be offered. If the student can not make the offered makeup class, there will be a full refund.
